The primary airport is Miami International Airport, while Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport also serves the area and is located nearby. The airport serves more than 35 million passengers, making it one of the busiest in the world.
There are four Interstate Highways that serve Miami: I-75, I-95, I-195, and I-395. Several U.S. Highways, including Route 1, Route 27, Route 41, and Route 441, also go through Miami.
While Miami is accessible by car, its distance from other cities means it will be a long drive. Traffic is notoriously bad in the city, and Miami has been ranked as a dangerous place for pedestrians, so caution should be taken when driving.
When is the best time to visit Miami?
Miami has warm, balmy weather all year thanks to its subtropical climate. There can be rain in the summer and fall, which means early spring is the best time to visit. From March to May, the sun is shining, and temperatures reach the low 80s, which makes this the ideal time for a trip.
Avoid traveling to Miami from June to November because this is the hurricane season, and there could be excessive rain. For hot summer days, dress accordingly, and don’t forget sun protection, especially if you are spending time at the beach.
What to do in Miami?
Although Miami is home to many businesses and has the largest concentration of international banks in the country, it is primarily known as a tourist destination. There are over sixteen beaches which are famous for the beautiful and pristine white sand.
The nightlife in Miami is also quite popular with many famous nightclubs. There are also a lot of shopping malls, entertainment centers, and golf courses. Miami Beach is a smaller city within the city and has many miles of beaches and Art Deco architecture.
A large Cuban influence is present in the food, and you can find Cuban coffee and sandwiches along with other foods at local restaurants in Little Havana and beyond. Many residents speak Spanish, and there is a strong South American influence throughout the city.
Miami is also a popular place for SCUBA diving, and there are many underwater wreck sites that divers enjoy visiting. There are also two national parks nearby, Biscayne National Park and Everglades National Park.
Miami is also home to many sports teams, including the Miami Dolphins (NFL), Miami Heat (NBA), Miami Marlins (MLB), and the Florida Panthers (NHL). There are several college sports teams, and the Orange Bowl takes place at Hard Rock Stadium every year.
Is Miami family-friendly?
The nightlife in Miami is quite famous, but there are still many things that make families feel welcome in the city. You can spend an entire vacation exploring the beautiful beaches like Lummus Park Beach or South Pointe Park Pier.
One of the must-visit places for families is the Miami Children’s Museum. This sprawling museum is full of fun with exhibits on art, health, construction, a music studio, an outdoor playground, a two-story castle, and a pretend supermarket.
Another great museum is the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science that has a three-level aquarium, large planetarium, and many other entertaining yet educational exhibits. The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens lets kids explore outdoors to explore exotic plants and flowers, waterfalls, and birds.
Miami also has a lot of great opportunities to see wildlife. Zoo Miami has open-air exhibits, and the warm climate means there is a wide variety of animals representing more than 500 species. Kids can get an up close and personal experience with animals through feedings and encounters or presentations. In addition to the zoo, Monkey Jungle is a 30-acre park where you can see monkeys and gorillas or take the rainforest adventure tour.
Jungle Island combines a theme park with a jungle of animals. You can take part in a flamingo or sloth encounter, interact with lemurs, and see the twin orangutans, red kangaroos, and hundreds of birds. Miami Seaquarium is the place to go if you want to swim with dolphins or seals, see stingrays, experience touch pools, or see penguins. There are also animal shows and lots of exhibits and aquariums.
